    (Abstract)

    Wang Guanshan, et al

(China Burns, WOunds and Ulcers Science and Technology Centre, Taishan Hospital)

Rabbits were artificially burned and smeared with Staphylococcus aUreus. The two pairs of rabbits were divided into two groups. Animals in the lst group were treated with MEBO and vaseline respeCtively without debriedement. Animals in the second group were treated with MEBO and vaseline respectively after debriedement. 3 days later, baCterial cultures were performed. In the lst group, the positive rates were 6. 67% and 100% and in the second group, the positive rates were 0% and 30%. The difference between the two groups was very significant P<0. 01, But the difference between the animals treated with MEBO in the two groups was of no significance P>0. 05.

The authors concluded that MEBO can be applied to the wounds without debriedement. The mechanism of action was discussed.

    (Abstract)

    Li Liping, et al

(No. 1 Affiliated Hospital, Hengyang Medical College)

The aims of this research are to investigate 1. histopathological changes in burn tissues caused by baCterial invasion. 2. the relationship between the results of histipathological examination and tissue homogenate bacterial culture and 3. the significance of histipathological examination of invasively infected burn wounds.

The results proved that on the lst day post burn, there were invasive infusions in the deep normal tissues, but no inflammation occurred. After 3 days, inflammations occurred, The degree of the histipathological change and the baCterial count in the wound had a positive correlation (rs= 0.94, P<0. 002 ). Combined use of histopathological examination and tissue homogenate bacterial culture is ideal for monitoring invasive infections of burn wounds.

    The Recognition of Wound infections

    (Abstract)

    Li Fengchun, et al

    (No. 322 Hospitsl, PLA)

When moist exposed therapy is used for treating burns, MEBO is the main drug for use,. It is very efficacious and is capable to protect the wound from being infected. The authors used MEBO for treating 380 cases of burn and found that the main causes of wound infection were: 1. the ointment used was a counterfeit, 2. the skin was contaminated by liquefied substances and 3. improper use of the ointment. The authors suggested that wound infections could be recognized by: 1. erythema of the wound and its circumference and 2. subcrustal empyema of the third degree wounds. the authors also made a discussion on the method of management.

102 Cases of Superficial Third Degree Burn Treated with Moist Exposed Therapy in Combination with "Ploughing and Weeding Method"

    (Abstract)

    Zhao Junriang, et al

(China Burns, Wounds and Ulcers Science and Technology Medical Ceatre of Nanyang)

102 cases of superficial third degree burn were treated with moist exposed therapy in combination with "plOughing and weeding method". The rate of skin grafting was only 32%. The healing period was 28 1 5 days. After recovery, the appearance was very good. The formation of residual wound was effectively controlled. The function recovered very well.

The key to the treatment was an immediate application of the "Ploughing and Weeding Method" for 3 days, once every 3 to 4 hours. The thickness should be less than 2 to 3mm to ensure no pain and no bleeding. The distance between the ctjttings was 2mm. The vertical and horizontal cuttings did not overlap. After 3 days, moist exposed therapy alone was applied. Elastic bandage was applied and the dressing was changed once every day for a period of 6 months.

The aim of this treatment was to raise the temperature of the wounds to faciliate liquefication of necrotic tissue and to avoid absorption of the toxins, so that parabiotic tissue, healthy tissue and epithelial cells can survive. "ploughing and weeding method" helps the drug to enter the tissue and the toxins and sphacelus to be ejected. The necrotic layer collapsed quickly and no longer provided a culture medium for baCterial growth. Therefore, infeCtions were rarely seen when this methos was used. The drug maintained its effect for 48 hours. It regulated the growing ratio of the epithelial cell and the fibrocyte, lessened the damage of the wounds and proteged the basement membrane. Therefore, the therapeutic course was shortened. This method is ideal for treating superficial third degree burns.

451 Cases of Pediatric Burn Treated with MEBO

    (Abstract)

    Han Quanfu, et al

(Research institute of Plastic Surgery of Burns, Jingmen City)

451 burnt children were treated with MEBO. Attention was paid to prevention and treatment of shock and septicemia and the management of the wounds. After practising for 4 years, the authors recognized that conventional treatment was rather complicated. If not thoroughly steriliZed, the necrotic wound tissue would cause septicemia. MEBO has good permeability. It proteCts and moisturizes the wounds and has good analgesic effect. It creates moist environment physiologically suitable for wound healing and keeps an adequate concentration of the ointment in the wounds. Thus it effeCtively controls the infection and septicemia. PH value of the wounds was d6termined before application of MEBO.

Early anti--shock measures should be taken to prevent shock. Attention should be paid to the change of urine output and the velocity of infussion should be adjusted. The doctors should be aware of the high incidence of shock when infants and children had a burn area exceeding 75% BSA. Colloidal and eledrolyte infussion at the second 24 hours should be half of the amount for the first 24 hours. Water intake should be kept the same as for the first 24 hours.

APPlication of MEBO is easy and simple. If no Shock and no septicemia occurred and the wounds were properly treated, the result will be very satisfactory.

    (Abstract)

    Zhou ROngfang, et al

(Dept of Plastic Surgery of Burns, North Jisngsu People' s Hospital, Affiliated to Yangzhou Medicsl College)

The authors analyzed the efficacy of early comprehensive treatment of 148 male children with perineum burn. Exposed therapy was the main treatment. If the wounds did not heal in 2 to 3 weeks, early nibbling decrustation was performed. After formation of new wounds, autografting with large reticular free skin graft of moderate thickness was performed. MEBO had been used to effectively control infections in the course of the treatment. The results were very satisfaCtory. This is an improtant measure for the prevention of local scar contracture dchrmity.

    (Abstract)

    Qian Yunfeng,et al

(Hospital of integrated Chinese and Western Medicine for Burns, Dough District, Harbin)

Wounds with ulcer, hypersarcosis, severed finger with bone exposed, stump infected with subcrustal empyema and deep sinus were treated with MEBO. MEBO has the advantages of its moisturizing. analgesic, tissue regeneration promoting and toxic substance removing effects. It helps liquefication of necrotic tissue and promotes spontaneous drainage. The change of dressings has to be performed in accordance with the condition of w the wounds. The results were very satisfactory. The patients had no pains. The wounds healed quickly and the funCtion recovered very well.

8 cases of cartilage of auricle abscess excision, 1 case of atheroma infected and excised, 5 cases of chronic deep ulcer and 2 cases of severed finger stump with bone exposed were treated MEBO.

The authors introduced the different methods of the application of MEBO in accordance with the condition of the wounds. Some typical cases were described in details.

79 Cases of Burn Treated with MEBO

    (Abstract)

    Xu Degao

(Dept. Of Surgery, Hospitsl of Chinese Medicine, Shanghai)

79 cases of burn were treated with MEBO and moist exposed therapy. All the patients healed.

This therapy had very good analgesic effect and local antiinfective effect. It lessened the damage of the wounds. The patients could see with their own eyes the healing course of their wounds and they were psychologically comforted.

The author expressed his opinion about the skin allergic reaction which occurred in some patients and suggested that the allergic reaction was caused by improper smearing of the ointment and the obstruction of the sebaceous glands. The author also suggested measures for preventing and treating skin boils and swellings.

    (Abstract)

    Zhao Panbo, et al

(Hospital of lotegrated Chinese and Western Medicine, ryngdao, Shandong Province)

Nasal septum erosion and ulcer are commonly seen and often complicated by epistaxis. Conventionally, the lesion was treated with drugs or by electric cauterization and then smeared with boric acid ointment. The therapeutic course was long and the result was not satisfactory. When MEBO was used, it promoted the proliferation of the cells in the nasal mucous membrane, enhanced the local immune function and protected the lesion area from being damaged by the acidic environment of the nasal cavity and thus it facilitated the healing of the wound. This method is simple and easy, has high efficacy and short therapeutic course.

Clinical Observation of 34 Cases of Atrophic Rhinitis Treated with MEBO in Combination with Thrombolytic Enzyme

    (Abstract)

    Huang Qingshan, et al

    (N. E. T. Dept., The Second Hospital, Laiwu City, Shandong Province)

The authors used MEBO in combination with thrombolytic enzyme for treating 34 cases of atrophic rhinitis. The average therapeutic course was 3 weeks. The patients were checked after 2 months. The activity of the cilia in the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and smelling function turned normal. The total effective rate was 97.1 %. The 10 cases in the control group were submitted to turbinectomy and had a total effective rate of 70%. The difference between the two groups was very significant.

The authors made a discussion and proved that MEBO used in combination with thrombolytic enzyme had very good effect because this method treat6d both the principal and the secondary aspeCts of the disease. This method is very simple, economical and has high efficacy but has no adverse effects and no pains. It is worthy ho be popularized.
